Flaw in Syn Attack Protection on non-updated Microsoft OSes can lead to DoS

Flaw in Syn Attack Protection on non-updated Microsoft OSes, can lead to DoS

Summary

It is possible to mount a DoS attack against Windows 2000/2003 hosts where
the SYN attack protection has been enabled. The attacker can consume all
CPU resources of the victim host making it unresponsive.
While a standard SYN flood attack can make a single application server
unavailable, this attack can make the whole host unreachable.

Systems Affected

Windows 2003 without SP1
Windows 2000 SP4 without Update Roll-Up

Description

On Windows 2000/2003 the system administrator can enable a SYN Attack
protection mechanism on the TCP/IP by adding the value SynAttackProtect in
the registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters.
If the value of SynAttackProtect is 2 the TCP/IP stack notifies a
listening socket only when the 3-way handshake has been completed and
tracks the ongoing 3-way handshakes by storing them in an hash table.
This way the backlog of the socket is defended from the SYN floods attacks.

SynAttackProtect is not enabled by default on the affected systems but has
been recommended by a number of articles:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q315669&sd=tech
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/topics/networksecurity/secdeny
.mspx
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnnetsec/html/HTHardTCP.asp
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;142641
http://www.securityfocus.net/infocus/1729
http://www.awprofessional.com/articles/article.asp?p=371702

The vulnerability resides in the hash table management, in fact the hash
function used by the TCP/IP stack works only on some fields of the
incoming SYN packet and is thus predictable. An attacker can generate a
large number of SYN packets with the same hash value to target the same
hash table bucket. When the victim machine receives them, it stores them
in just one bucket of the hash table. The chain attached to this bucket
keeps growing, and the more it grows, the slower the lookup algorithm
becomes.

Vendor response

I've notified Microsoft of the vulnerability 2 years ago, when
the attack was possible on the Windows 2000 version (SP3) in production at
that time.
They confirmed the vulnerability but didn't release a patch because the
correction needed extensive changes in the code of the TCP/IP stack.
Microsoft has patched the vulnerability in Windows 2003 SP1 and
Windows 2000 Update Roll-up but it has inadvertently forgot to notify me.
The new version of TCPIP.SYS has this Syn Attack Protection enabled by
default but uses a crypto hash function (MD5) for the table lookup. The
hash material is the source port, dest port, source ip, dest ip of the SYN
packet and some pseudo random material extracted at startup.
This way the hash function is not easily predictable.

Sitemaps for all

A recently discovered flaw in Google Sitemaps allows anyone to gain access to detailed statistics on a variety of websites.

The flaw is in the verification routine, which looks for a file with a specific hash value in its name to verify site ownership. While this works well for sites with default "404- File not found" pages, when sites use a redirect to a custom error page this is interpreted as the file being present, allowing anyone to successfully verify the site, according to David Naylor.

Several blogs discuss their successes with adding high profile sites to personal accounts, allowing the viewing of top search terms, click-throughs and more for these sites. Although the information revealed is not critical, many webmasters are sure to be concerned about their detailed site statistics being publicly accessible, and Google would be wise to fix this promptly.

Google has been noted in the past for providing information on insecure websites and hardware via crafty searches.

US AGAINST THE WORLD

*EVOL INTENT-"POLICE STATE" EP RELEASE PARTY*

FEATURING:

SPOR [Renegade Hardware / Barcode / TOV Music / Bassline Agency] London - UK
***The Us Against The World Tour***

Sounding from England and at just 21 years of age, Spor has quickly risen to the forefront edge of dark Drum & Bass production.

After being introduced to Drum & Bass at school through a friend just over three years ago, Jon began experimenting with software to create his own music. His friend Codex took interest and before long they were producing as 'Final Reckoning', skipping off school to work on tracks, with early influence coming from artists such as Hive and Bad Company. This moniker saw alot of early progress and development take place, and the pair began attending D&B nights. Soon differening Unversities meant that distance and time were issues, andFinal Reckoning production was temporarily stopped.Jon took on his solo moniker 'Spor', a tag name derived from one of the first folders of samples he obtained, entitled 'Spore Tactics'. Graffiti outlining eventually meant he would drop the 'e' to leave a more balanced arrangement.

Spor saw a debut release on the 'Damaged Minds' imprint, after friend and early mentor Murphy introduced him to Damage. This was a huge insentive to persue harder, and soon Spor had attracted further attention - landing himself an exclusive deal with one of Drum & Bass' most prestigious labels Renegade Hardware, and leading-edge label Barcode. This opened up DJ opportunities, and after playing his first set at Londons 'End' Club, Spor has continued to play across the globe.

Spors highlights from this year include the massive remix of Konflicts 'Messiah', and
'Way Of The Samurai' on the debut Barcode album 'Us Against The World.
Forthcoming material includes the soon to be released debut Hardware EP 'Spor Tactics.'
Spor is now also working on the first ever artist album for Renegade Hardware, as well as assorted side projects. Also due is his collaboration with Infiltrata 'Three Faces' due on Barcode, as well as his remix of Ewun's unique 'Hate Machine'."

Exploiting And Defending Networks: This presentation talks about taking advantage of an application and gaining "Enterprise Administrative Access" to an internal Windows 2003 network behind a firewall. It uses traditional techniques which are still valid on windows 2003 environment.

Exploiting And Defending Web Applications: This presentation talks about taking advantage of improper authentication, authorization, input validation and lost password to gain access to an application and gaining privileged access on a system behind a firewall.

Analyzing Code for Security Defects:
This presentation talks about a different technique (from Microsoft) in assigning value to risk when performing threat analysis. Once the threat has been determined it talks about how to perform a focused code review on a large code base. It also covers some basic problems that are typically found when performing code review in C/C++.

Cracking safes with thermal imaging

In short, virtually all keypad entry systems - as used in various applications, including building access control, alarm system control, electronic lock safes, ATM input, etc - are susceptible to a trivial low-profile passphrase snooping scheme. This attack enables the attacker to quickly and unobtrusively recover previously entered passphrases with a high degree of success. This is in contrast to previously documented methods of keypad snooping; these methods were in general either highly intrusive - required close presence or installation of specialized hardware - or difficult to carry out and not very reliable (e.g., examining deposited fingerprints - works in low-use situations only, and does not reveal the ordering of digits).

Google Base launched with security hole

Google has patched a security problem with its Google Base that allowed attackers to steal sensitive information from users of the new content-hosting service.

The problem, which was patched within hours of its discovery earlier this week, allowed attackers to steal cookies and other information from Google Base users and also gave attackers a way to embed fraudulent forms within Google Base Web pages. This type of problem, called a cross-site scripting vulnerability, has also cropped up in Google's search service and in Yahoo's mapping product.

Google Base, which was released in beta version on Wednesday, gives users a way to classify and post information like recipes or classified advertisements. Items that are listed there will then also appear at appropriate parts of Google's site, such as the Web index, the Froogle comparison shopping site and the local business directory.

The bug in Google Base was easy to find, and was due to "incompetent" programming on Google's part, according to Jim Ley, the U.K. computer expert who discovered the bug. "There'd obviously been no security testing whatsoever and there were trivially obvious [cross site scripting] holes in it," he wrote of Google Base, in a blog posting dated Wednesday.

Security experts have criticized Google in the past for being excessively secretive about what, if any, security procedures it uses to develop products. While rival Microsoft Corp. has gone to great lengths to publicly describe the steps it is taking to improve security in its software, Google has refused to talk about security, other than to confirm that it does have some employees who work in the area.

Google did not return calls seeking comment for this article.

The search giant's silence on the topic clearly irritated Ley, who said that Google didn't even send him an e-mail to acknowledge his initial report of the cross-scripting bug. "Google appear to have a complete silence approach to security, I guess they think what the public don't know can't worry them," he wrote on his blog.

Ley has discovered similar cross-scripting problems with Google's search service, and in Yahoo Maps.

These flaws show that companies like Yahoo and Google need to improve testing or risk losing public trust in their products, wrote Paul Mutton an Internet Services Developer with Netcraft. "The nature of the problems discovered by Ley provides fraudsters with the tools to create phishing sites with a good level of plausibility because the base URL would be that of a well-known brand - in this case Google or Yahoo," he wrote in a posting to Netcraft's Web site.

Internet Explorer 0-day exploit

The UK group "Computer Terrorism" released a proof of concept exploit against patched versions of Internet Explorer. We verified that the code is working on a fully patched Windows XP system with default configuration.

The bug uses a problem in the javascript 'Window()' function, if run from 'onload'. 'onload' is an argument to the HTML tag, and is used to execute javascript as the page loads.

The Javascript Window() vulnerability has been known for a few months now, but it has so far been treated as a denial of service (DoS) vulnerability. The author of this PoC figured out a way to use this older vulnerability to execute code.

Impact:
Arbitrary executables may be executed without user interaction. The PoC demo as tested by us will launch the calculator (calc.exe).

In addition ot the PoC 'Calculator' exploit, a reader (thanks Chris R!) submitted a version that opens a remote shell. The PoC exploit allows for easy copy/paste of various shell code snippets.

In itself, the vulnerability will not escalate privileges. We are trying to verify other exploits at this point.

Mitigation:
Turn off javascript, or use an alternative browser (Opera, Firefox). If you happen to use Firefox: This bug is not affecting firefox. But others may. For firefox, the extnion 'noscript' can be used to easily allow Javascript for selected sites only.

DJ Kid: By far the most prolific DJ in the Scottish D&B scene. Kid achieved his status with over 10 years of relentless hard work and a passionate drive for Drum & Bass. Coming from an era in Scotland when the early sounds of Breakbeat and Jungle looked like they would never find acceptance, Kid has stuck to his guns and continually pushed the boundaries north of the border, working hard at promoting nights and continually harassing the media to shed light on the music and scene he loves.

Scotland currently boasts a number of talented DJs, MCs, Producers and regular clubnights but it’s DJ Kid who’s pioneered this movement. He was also a key figure in the huge success that Manga (his resident club night) in Edinburgh has enjoyed, the night is about to celebrate a decade of D&B pressure in the Scottish capital.

2004 saw DJ Kid launch his own record label: Restless Natives Records which, so far, has had five strong releases. Restless Natives is dedicated to pushing new talents, such as DJ Kryptik, Dc Breaks and, most notably, DJ Samurai who’s been getting some major attention from the scene’s top dogs. Andy C even phoned Kid to ask if he could take ‘Be Mine’ off his hands for one of his labels. Kid says “The label is simply a platform for up & coming producers to showcase their talents and step up the ladder as quickly as possible.” Earlier this year Kid was invited to do the cover CD for Knowledge, he delivered a mix complete with his trademark tight mixing style, showcasing both past and future releases on his label.

After many years of supporting the scene north of the border Kid has finally made the move down south where he’s been living for the past three months in Guildford: “I always had in the back of my mind that I’d love to give things a shot down south, as that’s where its at no doubt. Now that I’ve finally made this move I feel like I’m starting all over again and feel so excited at all the new options available to me. Since I moved here I have basically concentrated on getting settled but now I’m starting to let people know I’m living down here and chasing a few promoters again as well as arranging to work with a whole array of Drum & Bass producers who I’ve been close friends for many years.”

DJ Kid has set his sights fully on making his biggest impact on the scene in 2006 and from his past exploits he should have no problem in doing so. Listen out for Kid making a guest appearance on DJ Hype’s Kiss 100 show and of course his very first DOA mix.

For further details on DJ Kid check his website where you can find out everything there is no know about him which also includes a bag of audio for you listen too.

Up & coming producers feel free to send Kid demos via AIM: djkiddubz

Scratch Perverts

Unkle vs Scratch Perverts - some time in 1999?

James Lavelle, Tony Vegas, Prime Cuts and 5 decks.

Couldn't for the life of me find a tracklist for this, though there's nothing too obscure on there so might try and list them myself sometime. It's largely made up of tracks off Psyence Fiction so shouldn't be too hard. Not sure on it's exact date, but when it's introduced it says it's around the time 'Be there' was released which I think was sometime in 1999. Highlight of the mix has to be a remix of that track, typical Lavelle remix - absoultely rocks.

Mr Scruff

Mr Scruff - unknown date

There have been a few other Mr Scruff Breezeblocks but their tracklists don't suit the mix, think this one's quite old and the archives on Radio 1's website only go back to 2002.

It's a pretty good eclectic mix and worth a listen if just for the little adverts interspersed throughout it prompting companies like The Seventies Freezer Center, Morecabme, Chelmsford Erotic Telephone Banking and Shower Jazz (which sounds like it could possibly be more entertaining than any of these mix sets).

Download - 72,656Kb, 60m 32s.
Steinski and Jonathan Moore (inset)

Steinski vs Plus One vs Jonathan Moore - Unknown Date

What a combination. Start off with Jonathan Moore from Coldcut, throw in some classics from Steinski's encyclopedic knowlege and mix it up with some top class turntablism from Plus One and this is what you get.

Lovely stuff.

Extracting Codeine

Below are two procedures for removing the "garbage" from pills that contain codeine. There were taken from newsgroup postings and credit is given. The opinions expressed are those of the writers who are less cautious than we here at Heroin Helper. In particular, to the comment made below that "you only live once", we would add, "you only die once".

Procedure 1
This was the first extraction I ever worked out. It is a simple method of extracting about 500mg of Codeine Phosphate salt from 100 8mg Panadeine tablets. Comes in mighty handy if you're hanging out with nothing more then $10, a 500ml enamel cup, a 40cm length of 20mm poly pipe, and some toilet paper.

Dissolve your 100 tabs in about 250ml of cold water. When dissolved, mix and let settle in a fridge. If the water is cold, most of the chalk and undissolved paracetamol will settle out leaving the solution near clear.

If the solution is clear, carefully siphon off the clear top layer and discard the chalk layer. If it's not clear, you will need to filter it. To do this, you will need to make a simple filtering coulomb. You do so as follows: roll up a neat even sausage of toilet paper Make it a size so that it fits fairly sight in the end of the 40 cm length of 20 mm poly pipe. Pour the un-clear Panadeine solution through the filtering coulomb. Collect the clear solution (filtrate).

Place the clear solution in the enamel cup and boil it down to about 20 to 30 ml. Remove the cup from the heat and place it in the freezer for a couple of minutes. Upon cooling, a white precipitate of Paracetamol will form on the bottom of the cup. Using a piece of cotton wool and a 20 ml syringe, remove all the solution and a 5 ml cold water wash.

Rinse out the cup and replace the filtrate. Put it back on the heat, reducing the solution to about 10ml. This time upon cooling, the Paracetamol will be about half the solution. Using the cotton wool and syringe, remove the concentrated Codeine solution.

Warning: There is a [a lot] of Codeine Phosphate there, about 300 to 800mg. So don't blow your head off if you shoot it. Injecting Codeine is not quit advisable to the average weekend user, but ... you only live once.

What I use to do was have a 300mg shot of Codeine in the doctor's car park then crawl inside with a massive Codeine headache and 9 out of 10 doctors would do me a shot of Peth. But like I said Shooting Codeine can cause brain haemorrhage, due to high blood pressure. Maybe just eat it.

Procedure 2
Over the years, I have developed my own technique for extracting codeine from OTC aspirin products. [Such products are over the counter (OTC) in places like Canada and the United Kingdom--not the USA -Ed.] I have read the FAQ and think that the cold water method is a good process, but that my process is better since it eliminates the bulk of the caffeine and is much easier to do. The only drawback of my process is that it doesn't work with Tylenol containing tablets. Thus the procedure below only is useful with AC&C type tablets from Canada.

Advantages:
* Removes almost all the aspirin.
* Leaves very little caffeine in the product.
* Is faster to prepare.
* Requires no power, refrigeration, or complicated equipment.
* Has built in filtration.
* Necessary equipment can fit in a small pouch or bag.
* None of the equipment is restricted.

Disadvantage:
* Doesn't work with tablets containing Tylenol.

The equipment needed is readily available and will fit into a relatively small pouch or bag. I will list the equipment below:
* 20 cc or 30 cc syringe, either glass or plastic (available at hobby or craft stores)
* Small piece of paper towel about 3 x 3 inches
* Mortar and Pestle (to grind tablets, or suitable substitute)
* Funnel
* Water
* Small collection bottle

Procedure:
Take the small piece of paper towel and fold it up so that it forms a plug about 1/8" thick that will fit the circular area of the 20 cc syringe that you have chosen. Get it soaked with water and push it down to the bottom of the syringe. Insert the syringe plunger and push it all the way down and press the paper at the bottom. The paper should form a plug that fits the shape of the syringe about 1/8 inch thick. Your filtering syringe is now ready for use. You only have to do this part once.

Grind about 20 AC&C tablets (160mg codeine) into a fine powder. I use a thick walled juice glass about 2 inches tall and a steel rod about 1/2 inch in diameter and 6 inches long. I place the 20 tablets in the bottom and break them each by placing the end of the steel rod on each tablet and pressing while twisting. After all are broken up, move the steel rod around against the walls for about a minute to grind into a fine powder. It is important that a fine powder be obtained. Note: AC&C tabs come from basically 2 manufacturers. One makes a little larger tablet that is much easier to grind. I get this one as a brand name called "Life". The other maker usually is the "Big V" brand. Both work well, the slightly larger tabs just grind easier.

Pour the powder into the open syringe. It should go in evenly. Use a funnel or a paper water cup with the bottom cut off to pour it in. In a 20cc syringe, it will fill about 10cc or so. Gently tamp down the surface of the powder about a quarter inch or so to make a firm surface. I use the steel rod to do this. Pour down the sides about 5 to 8cc of room temperature water. Pour it down the sides as to not break up the surface of the powder. Gently insert the plunger into the syringe and apply gentle pressure. You want the water to take about a minute to travel evenly through the powder. It is important that it travel evenly, if not then you made a mistake in grinding, pouring, or packing the powder. As the water travels through the powder, codeine's large solubility makes it concentrate in the leading edge of the water inhibiting the dissolution of the aspirin and caffeine.

Collect about 3 to 4 cc of the solution, about 60 to 80 drops depending on the syringe tip. This small volume of solution will have virtually all of the codeine and very little of the aspirin and caffeine. When done, withdraw the plunger. Then, many times, you can blow hard on the end of the syringe and the plug of aspirin will come out making it ready for next time.

This solution can be sterilized and IM injected or just taken orally. I usually do 2 of these batches into a 20cc small bottle. For oral use, I'll fill the rest of the bottle with water so that I can judge the dose more accurately. For IM injection, I'll put one batch in the bottle and add an equal volume of water. Then loosen the lid to allow pressure to escape and put it in the microwave for 10 to 60 seconds depending on the oven. Watch through the window and stop it when it starts to boil. Allow it to cool and it is ready for injection into one of many enjoyable spots. A fine point for IM, they put an acidic powder in the tabs which makes the product solution irritating when injected. This can be neutralized with a very small amount of baking soda. Don't add too much though, if the solution goes basic in pH it will be much worse than the original. If the solution doesn't fizz when you add the baking soda, you've added too much.

This simple technique is fast and efficient. I can perform this procedure in a couple of minutes. If you try this with tabs containing Tylenol, it will form a solid plug of powder and no matter how hard you apply pressure you won't be able to get any solution out. For Tylenol products, use the FAQ cold water technique.

Conversion of Oxycodone to Oxymorphone

It seems a number of bees have access to oxycodone. Once this compound is available, one would immediately dream of converting this compound into the far more potent oxymorphone. This would increase the potency by a factor of 15 when based on intramuscular application.

Most processes to split off the O-methyl in codeines are quite messy, the yield is low, expensive or hard-to-get chemicals are required ... and a lot more worries which makes it usually not parctical to do for bees. But now yours truly has now found a process TO DO IT in a process adaptable to kitchen chemistry. All chemicals are cheap and unsuspicious.

Here is the procedure
A mixture of 3.15 g (10e-2 mole) of oxycodone, 28.3 g (3.1e-1 mole) of methanesulfonic acid and 2.2 g of DL-methionine are heated to 40° C. The reaction mixture is stirred at this temperature for 12 hours and then poured onto ice. The mixture is made alkaline with ammonia to a pH = 8 to 9, then extracted with dichloromethane. The organic phases are washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The crude product thus obtained (2.51 g) is purified on a column of silica by eluating with pure chloroform followed by a gradient with methanol. 2.17 g of oxymorphone are thus obtained, which represents a yield of 72%.

You will most likely want to convert this into the hydrochloride: 5 g of the purified base previously obtained are disolved in 30 ml of warm acetone. After concentration to about 10 ml, 5 ml of 6N hydrochloric acid are added to the warm solution. The mixture is cooled to -10° C, and the precipitate is filtered off, washed with acetone and dried at 50° C in a vacuum. 4.83 g of oxymorphone hydrochloride are thus obtained. Yield 87%.

With an overall yield of 63% and a potency increase of 15, the actual gain factor is around 9, i.e. you have 9 times more opioid activity than at the beginning. A one-day dose can therefore be converted into a week-dose. No bad, eh?

The kitchen chemistry adaptions would include the use of a hair dryer insted of the reduced pressure, skipping the purification process (the crude product should be clean enough and no toxic chemicals have been used).

I already know your next question: will it work with codeine or other codeine derivatives like dihydrocodeine or hydrocodone? NO, it won't. The yield would be terribly low (~15%) and a lot of goo is formed so serious cleanup has to be done.
