Huygens begins its final journey
The European Space Agency’s Huygens probe was successfully released by NASA’s Cassini orbiter early this morning and is now on a controlled collision course toward Saturn’s largest and most mysterious moon, Titan, where on 14 January it will make a descent through one of the most intriguing atmospheres in the solar system to an unknown surface.
"Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a thick, nitrogen-rich atmosphere" -- relatively similar to that on Earth -- said Huygens project scientist Jean-Pierre Lebreton. "In this atmosphere, we may have chemical reactions similar to ones occurring before life appeared on Earth. Going in situ will allow us to better understand what causes those chemical reactions to take place."

Rapper ODB died from drugs overdose
The results of an autopsy have revealed that rapper ODB died from a drugs overdose.
The New York City medical examiner's office announced yesterday that the rap-singer, real name Russell Jones, had taken cocaine and a prescription pain relief drug before he collapsed and died at a recording studio last month.
He complained of chest pains before collapsing at the Manhattan studio, but died before emergency serviced arrived on the scene.
Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, confirmed that ODB's death had been ruled an accident, after toxicology tests showed the presence of cocaine and Tramadol, a non-narcotic pain reliever.
ODB was a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan in the early 1990s. He was also well-known for his collaboration with Kelis on the track 'Got Your Money'.

Genesis Crash
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The NASA spacecraft that smashed into the Utah desert last month while bringing home fragile samples of the sun may have been doomed by engineering drawings that had been done backwards, an investigating board said Friday.
Because of the backward drawings, the switches that were supposed to detect Genesis' re-entry into Earth's atmosphere and trigger its parachutes were placed incorrectly, said Michael G. Ryschkewitsch, chairman of the board.
He emphasized, however, that the panel has not completed its findings on what went wrong with the $264 million mission to capture particles of the solar wind.
The design drawings were produced by Lockheed Martin Astronautics, which built Genesis for NASA, Ryschkewitsch said. How the mistake escaped detection is under investigation, he said.
The capsule spent three years in space but slammed into the Utah desert Sept. 8 at nearly 200 mph after its parachutes failed to open. The impact shattered the special collector arrays inside the capsule.
The pieces now fill more than 3,000 containers that have been sent to NASA's Johnson Space Center, where scientists are optimistic the samples will be useful.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 incorporates many enhancements to try to better protect systems from malware and other forms of attacks. One of those layers of protection is the Windows XP SP2 Firewall. One of the features of this Firewall is the ability to allow users to decide what applications can listen on the network. By allowing users to control what applications can communicate on the network, Microsoft believes that systems will be protected against threats such as Trojans. Like so many things Microsoft says, this is inaccurate and in fact it is very easy for locally executing code to bypass the Windows Firewall. So don't worry you aspiring Trojan developers, your still going to be able to Trojan consumer and corporate systems to your hearts content.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Paralysed film actor Christopher Reeve, who played Superman, has died, Fox News Channel television has reported.
Fox quoted a U.S. news agency as saying Reeve died on Sunday after suffering a heart attack on Saturday and going into a coma.
Reeve, 52, suffered multiple injuries including two shattered neck vertebrae when he was thrown from his horse at an equestrian event in 1995.

She Can't Smile Without You
The Mona Lisa's half-smile is famously ambigious. Is she grinning or grimacing? Art historians argue that her mercurial mouth is little more than Renaissance special f/x. Neuroscientists offer newer theories: It's about how your brain processes light - or how your eye perceives detail. Maybe all three explanations are right. Leonardo, as good a scientist as he was an artist, probably would have thought so.
Theory 1: Brush strokes
Art experts credit sfumato, the brush technique da Vinci used to paint Mona's expression. From the Italian for "blended" or "smoky," sfumato refers to the use of featherlight strokes to apply layers of translucent color. The blended tones soften outlines, hazing the boundaries between Mona's lips and cheeks [A]. The shadows around the lips seem to pull up the corners of the mouth, suggesting a smile.
Theory 2: Fields of view
Mona's enigmatic expression may literally be in the eye of the beholder. "Look directly at her mouth - her smile disappears," says Margaret Livingstone, a Harvard neurobiologist. "Central vision does not perceive shadowy components well. Look at the eyes, seeing the mouth only with your peripheral vision, and her glorious grin becomes obvious." That's because the human eye's foveal, or central, vision is set up to best perceive detail (and is connected to a disproportionately larger chunk of the brain's visual cortex); peripheral vision is optimized for broad visual strokes.
To illustrate the effect, Livingstone altered Mona in Photoshop. She used a Gaussian blur filter to emphasize the coarse [B] and medium [C] grains, to mimic how you'd see the painting out of the corner of your eye. Then she applied a high-pass filter to underscore the finer detail [D], isolating the dead-ahead view. The result: As detail increased, Mona's grin goes flat.
Theory 3: Mental images
The human brain is wired to perceive emotion in facial expressions. But with millions of neurons clicking on and off, the brain is also intrinsically noisy. This neural static lends a normally imperceptible instability to what we see. And it can make Mona's face seem to flip from happy to sad, depending on what the noise distorts. The critical features: her lips and cheeks.
Researchers at San Francisco's Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute tested the effect of the noise by overwriting a copy of Mona with random, computer-generated pixelation. In the images where the pixels accidentally enhanced the curvature at the corners of her mouth [E], observers saw Mona as happy. Images where the pixels got in the way of the curve, giving a straighter line [F], had the opposite effect. "It worked with a photo of my girlfriend, too," says vision scientist Leonid Kontsevich. "But she refused to have her picture published in the study."

The Morphine Has Hit the Fan
Morphine is a plant (opium poppy)-derived alkaloid and one of the strongest known analgesic compounds. Studies from several laboratories have suggested that animal and human tissue or fluids contain trace amounts of morphine. Its origin in mammals has been believed to be of dietary origin. Here, we address the question of whether morphine is of endogenous origin or derived from exogenous sources. Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids present in human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) and human pancreas carcinoma cells (DAN-G) were identified by GC/tandem MS (MS/MS) as norlaudanosoline (DAN-G), reticuline (DAN-G and SH-SY5Y), and morphine (10 nM, SH-SY5Y). The stereochemistry of reticuline was determined to be 1-(S). Growth of the SH-SY5Y cell line in the presence of 18O2 led to the [18O]-labeled morphine that had the molecular weight 4 mass units higher than if grown in 16O2, indicating the presence of two atoms of 18O per molecule of morphine. Growth of DAN-G cells in an 18O2 atmosphere yielded norlaudanosoline and (S)-reticuline, both labeled at only two of the four oxygen atoms. This result clearly demonstrates that all three alkaloids are of biosynthetic origin and suggests that norlaudanosoline and (S)-reticuline are endogenous precursors of morphine. Feeding of [ring-13C6]-tyramine, [1-13C, N-13CH3]-(S)-reticuline and [N-CD3]-thebaine to the neuroblastoma cells led each to the position-specific labeling of morphine, as established by GC/MS/MS. Without doubt, human cells can produce the alkaloid morphine. The studies presented here serve as a platform for the exploration of the function of "endogenous morphine" in the neurosciences and immunosciences.

Cain & Abel is a password recovery tool for Microsoft Operating Systems. It allows easy recovery of various kind of passwords by sniffing the network, cracking encrypted passwords using Dictionary, Brute-Force and Cryptanalysis attacks, decoding scrambled passwords, revealing password boxes, uncovering cached passwords and analyzing routing protocols. The program comes in two versions because of the differences and limitations of some API.
Version 2.5 is faster and contains a lot of new features like APR (Arp Poison Routing) which enables sniffing on switched LANs by hijacking IP traffic of multiple hosts at the same time. The sniffer can also analyze encrypted protocols such as SSH-1 and HTTPS if used with APR and a Man-in-the-middle situation. Cain also ships routing protocols authentication monitors and routes extractors, crackers for all common hashing algorithms and for other various specific authentications, password calculators (Cisco PIX Hashes, RSA SecurID Tokens), decoders (Access Databases, Base64, Cisco Type-7, Enterprise Manager, Dialup, Remote Desktop) and some utilities like the Cisco Config Downloader/Uploader, the SiD-Scanner, the LSA Secrets Dumper, the Protected Storage Passwords Viewer, the NT Hash-Dumper (works with Syskey enabled), the Abel Remote Console, the MAC Scanner, the Promiscuous-Mode Scanner, the Wireless Scanner and the TCP/UDP/ICMP Traceroute + DNS Resolver + Netmask Discovery + WHOIS resolver (extract informations from RIPE's Database).
However the program is still in beta and may contain bugs.
